 PTA Council of Frederick County Roundtable

 

January 29, 2002

 

MINUTES

 

            The Board of Education met at 7:30 p.m. in the Monocacy Middle School Media Center.  In attendance were President Ronald W. Peppe, II, Vice President Daryl A. Boffman, Deborah A. Aughenbaugh, Stephen Crawford, Anne B. Hooper, Linda S. Naylor, and Jean A. Smith. 

Jack D. Dale, Secretary-Treasurer, and Judith A. Ricketts, Administrative Director, were also in attendance.

 

            Sharla Worley, President of the PTA Council of Frederick County, opened the meeting, and introductions were made. 

 

Board members responded to questions and made comments regarding:

 

            Potential impact of Thornton Commission funding

            School redistricting process

School choice

Knowledge Is Power Program

Research on the correlation of low SES and achievement

Education of low SES students

Resources

Parent involvement in the schools and its impact on children

MSTA report on the Thornton Commission

Equity in all schools

BOE member’s goal of reading teachers in all schools

Options for school construction

Consideration of items by the Board

Proposed funding in the operating budget for a charter school

Reading

Board of Education Student Representative involvement

Board of Education/Board of County Commissioners Joint Meeting

Enrollment projections

Textbooks/books for every child

Portables

Need to express the desires of the community to the County Commissioners

Grouping

Transition of gifted and talented students from elementary to middle school

Identification of students for the elementary gifted and talented program

 

Board of Education members thanked the individuals for attending this meeting and for being involved, and they encouraged communication to the Board of Education by email.

 

 

 

            Mrs. Worley thanked Board of Education members for participating in this meeting.
